Behind the Design: A Moody Pantry Full of Character

This pantry was designed as part of a larger kitchen project, with one overarching goal in mind: every space in the home should have its own personality and sense of character.

While the main kitchen feels open and inviting, I wanted the pantry to offer a different experience. Rather than treating it as a purely functional storage area, I approached it as an opportunity to create a moodier, more intimate space filled with warmth, texture, and charm.

One of the first decisions was the cabinetry. Rich walnut cabinetry became the foundation of the design, bringing depth and warmth to the room while creating a beautiful contrast against the patterned finishes. Functionality was equally important.

Every drawer was carefully planned with a purpose. Larger drawers provide generous storage for pantry staples and canned goods, while smaller drawers offer dedicated organization for spices and everyday essentials.

Fresh produce was also an important consideration. Open storage for fruits and vegetables allows these everyday items to become part of the visual composition of the room while remaining easily accessible.

For the homeowners, wine storage was a must. A dedicated wine refrigerator is paired with custom wine storage, creating a practical solution that also contributes to the overall character of the space.

The walls are wrapped in a beautiful floral wallpaper by Amber Interiors bringing softness and movement to the room. To continue the layered palette, the ceiling was painted Benjamin Moore’s

Kurkuma, a warm mustard tone that creates a cozy glow and enhances the room’s moody atmosphere.

To give the room even more personality, I introduced bold pattern and contrast through the finishes. The floor features a striking mosaic zelliage tile from Zia Tiles, combining burgundy and warm yellow tones in a dynamic pattern that immediately draws the eye. Rather than competing with the cabinetry, it complements the richness of the walnut and adds a playful layer to the design.

The countertop is Nero Marquina, whose deep black surface grounds the entire palette and provides a sophisticated contrast against the warmth of the wood, wallpaper, and ceiling color.

Lighting played an essential role in shaping the experience of the space. Vintage cane pendants sourced through 1stDibs add texture and warmth, while decorative plates and carefully selected accessories contribute to the collected, lived-in feel I wanted to achieve.

The finishing touch is a custom walnut and glass sliding enclosure that separates the pantry from the kitchen. Beyond its practical function, it creates a beautiful visual transition, allowing the pantry to feel like its own destination within the home while still remaining connected to the larger kitchen.

This project is a reminder that utility spaces don’t have to be purely functional. Some of the most memorable rooms in a home are often the ones we use every day. By layering materials, pattern, color, and thoughtful storage solutions, this pantry became far more than a place to store food. It became a space with its own identity, atmosphere, and story.

Do you think utility spaces deserve as much attention as the main living areas?

I’d love to hear your thoughts!
